  • If you would like to do an unpaid internship but can’t afford to, apply for CCESR’s Community Engagement & Experiential Learning Stipend (CEELS) Program that will be offered during the Fall and Spring semesters
  • The CEELS stipend will pay $18/hour with a maximum of $3,000 (this averages 20 hours a week for an 8-week program).
  • Priority will be given to students with proposals that engage with local communities.
  • The application for the Summer 2024 semester opens on March 22nd and closes on May 24th.

Citizenship Ambassador - The Citizenship Ambassador Program of Greater Hartford Area

  • The American Place (TAP) is a division of Hartford Public Library (HPL), established in 2000. Fully aligned with our Library’s mission, TAP provides industry recognized certificate training, GED preparation services, English as a second language, and a nationally recognized U.S. Citizenship program, supporting immigrants in achieving citizenship and becoming vested citizens. Our learning environment reflects Hartford’s shared civic values, rich history, and vibrant multiculturalism. 
  • Citizenship Ambassadors will learn about citizenship, prepare immigrants for naturalization, and encourage the civic, linguistic, and cultural integration of immigrants into the Hartford community. They will work with TAP staff and clients in three areas: education, media & communications, and/or outreach & recruitment. Responsibilities include:  
    • providing educational support for ESL and citizenship students   
    • facilitating workshops on digital literacy 
    • attending outreach events and foster discussions around citizenship

New Life II Job Opportunity – Recovery Community Center Facilitator

Internship Opportunities at New Britain Housing Authority

The New Britain Housing Authority has internship opportunities for students in different areas of study, including:

Social Work:  Students will work alongside resident service staff to engage families, elderly and disabled households living in low-income housing.  Students will have the opportunity to do resident assessments, create and implement surveys, plan and carry out special projects such as the Thanksgiving distribution and holiday toy program, facilitate groups for adults and/or children, network with local providers to establish community supports to benefit residents, write case notes and participate in special projects.  Students may organize resident meetings, listening sessions or focus groups. A special project that will be launching is the establishment of a resident council, which will involve community organizing and empowering residents to engage in a process that will allow their voices and thoughts about their community to be heard.

Psychology: Students will work alongside resident service staff to engage families, elderly and disabled households living in low-income housing.  Students will have the opportunity to do resident assessments, provide crisis intervention to households facing eviction, food insecurity, etc., create and implement surveys of residents’ interests, barriers to self-sufficiency, education and employment, network with local providers to establish community supports to benefit residents, write case notes, and participate in special projects. Students may organize resident meetings, listening sessions or focus groups.

Gerontology:  Students will work alongside our Resident Service Coordinator to engage elderly and disabled residents living in public housing. Our work with residents is focused on assessing their needs and providing services or linkages to programs that allow them to age in place;  students will have the opportunity to do assessments, prepare, plan, and execute group activities and educational or health related workshops, create opportunities for residents to engage socially with one another and participate in special projects.  One special project we would like to implement is a legacy club in which students could interview residents, photograph them, write their “story”, and create a legacy board in one of five community rooms celebrating the life and experiences of our senior population.  A bilingual (Spanish speaking) student is preferred.

Communications/Media/Graphic Design:  Students will be tasked with assessing and evaluating the messaging and branding of the New Britain Housing Authority, through its social media, web presence, etc.  Students will have the opportunity to create a communication strategy, content calendar, design resident centered communication and collateral materials, etc.

Finance/Mathematics: Students will be trained by one of our partner agencies to use a financial literacy curriculum.  Students will then work with families enrolled in the Housing Authority’s Family Self Sufficiency or Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency Programs. Students will have the opportunity to help households establish a budget, identify monetary escapes, learn about their credit score and establish a plan to maintain a balanced household budget.

  • The ReStore development VISTA member researches and implements best practices for standard ReStore operating policies. This could look like marketing the store to community members and donors, developing or enhancing a volunteer program, evaluating the impact of the store within the community or developing ReStore business processes. Each project development is created in a sustainable manner to continue beyond your service.
  • Minimum Requirements:

Greater New Britain Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Inc. (Pathways/Senderos Center)

  • Pathways/Senderos is a youth development program that runs after school programs for children ages 11-18. The program offers tutoring, career and college exploration, wellness, recreation, and other enrichment activities.

Volunteer Opportunities at CLICC 

  • CLICC literacy and mentoring for incarcerated parents and their children (www.connectingfamilies.org) is looking for CCSU Students interested in mentoring a child of an incarcerated parent.  
  • CLICC child mentors —many of them college students — receive training and pass a background check to mentor the children of these parents, right in the children's community. CLICC mentors meet one-to-one with children for one hour, once a week, for a period of one calendar year (many mentoring pairs go to a more relaxed schedule during the summer, however.)  
  • CLICC's model uses reading books, selected by participating children, to increase communication and strengthen relationships between incarcerated parents and their children.

Connecticut Foodshare Mobile Pantry helps address food deserts and transportation barriers that make it difficult for people who are food insecure to access the adequate nutrition they need.

Local residents can come to the Mobile Pantry and get fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, bread, and more

Every other Tuesday in New Britain, the Mobile Pantry visits two locations in New Britain

The CT Money School and the CT Association for Human Services are looking for volunteer facilitators for financial literacy workshops throughout Connecticut communities. Workshops help participants to reduce debt, increase savings, improve credit, build budgeting skills, etc.

Revive Church is a partner with a Connecticut food pantry program and receives food in bulk once a month, then shorts and distributes it to families in need.

The food deliveries arrive the third Wednesday of the month between 8:15 and 10 a.m.  to be offloaded from the truck (looking for volunteers to arrive at 8:15 a.m.).

 Distribution is the third Friday of the month from 5 to 7 p.m.. Looking for volunteers to start at 4:15 p.m.

The Missing Piece needs volunteers for:

• Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut (LVCC) is a nonprofit that provides tutoring for adults.  The majority of students are English language learners (immigrants who are learning English) and we are currently seeking volunteers interested in tutoring English. Tutoring takes place for 2 hours per week at a time that is convenient for you.  Tutoring can occur in any public space in the 15 Central CT towns we serve, but we recommend that tutors in the New Britain area meet at the New Britain Public Library.  
• Foreign language skills and prior teaching experience are not required!  A free tutor training will be provided.
